MealBuddy is a study and implementation of UX research methods. We exercised primary and secondary research through interviews, surveys, and government data and statistics to make an informed decision for a solution to our 'How Might We' statement: How might we help people eat healthy meals more frequently?

How Might We Help People Eat Healthy Meals More Frequently?

What is healthy eating?

We quickly realized the tricky part of our how might we statement is that healthy eating is subjective so there is no concrete answer to that, it depends on the individual.

Primary Research

Our first step in the research process was primary research, we put together a set on interview questions to gain insights.

Interview Questions

These are the interview questions we came up with. We interviewed friends in our target audience as well as posted a survey to several channels online for more data.

Finding #1

Our first finding was that most people prefer a mixture of cooking and ordering take out so this was something we took into consideration for our solution.

Finding #2

Secondly, we found a majority of people do enjoy cooking so not doing it all the time isn't related to lack of enjoyment.

Finding #3

Thirdly, we asked about people's living situations as this influences cooking and eating habits. We found that most people live with others.

Finding #4

Naturally, we also asked about dietary restrictions. Although a large portion of people said no, we decided to keep into consideration potential dietary restrictions and consider people living in shared spaces with different dietary needs.

Finding #5

We asked if money factors into what foods people choose to eat. If we combine 'no' and 'sometimes' responses, it is almost a 50/50 split.

Key Insights

These are the following key insights we gathered from our primary research which consisted of a combination of interviews and surveys.

Secondary Research

We did some secondary research to see if it aligns with our insights. According to Statistics Canada over 50% of Metro Vancouver identifies as a minority and according to Research Co. 1/3 of BC residents have ordered food via apps before and 44% of them are aged 18-34. This led us to start thinking of solutions that include diverse cuisine choices and an app based solution, potentially involving delivery as the primary users of food delivery apps are our target audience.

Concepts

We came up with three concepts for apps that take into consideration all the research and insights we gathered.

Our Solution: MealBuddy

MealBuddy is a service similar to HelloFresh but with a combination of pre-made meals and ingredients to prepare meals from scratch.

What is MealBuddy?

MealBuddy offers a combination of pre-made meals and ingredient kits throughout the week which you can adjust the amounts of each. It will offer a variety of cuisines as we hope to help teach young adults how to cook cultural dishes.

Why?

MealBuddy is a meal planning option that offers diversity for a wide range of dietary needs, as healthy eating is subjective. It would be a cheaper and healthier alternative to ordering takeout regularly and address obstacles with meal planning and grocery shopping.

Prototype

This is a medium fidelity prototype demonstrating our product idea based on our research, insights and key findings.
